Benefit of Using Telecare for Dementia Patients with Hearing Loss and Their Caregivers

A large portion of individuals with dementia also have hearing loss.  When these patients are fitted with hearing aids for the first time, the use and operation of the instruments can be a struggle, and the struggle often carries over to their caregivers.  This research found that the use of teleaudiology via Signia TeleCare for these new hearing aid users increased awareness, improved benefit for several different communication settings, and reduced associated stress for the caregivers.

Thomas A. Powers, Ph.D., is the Managing Member of Powers Consulting, LLC, providing management consulting to the hearing health industry.   Dr. Powers serves an expert audiology consultant for the Better Hearing Institute, and as a Senior Consultant for Sivantos, Inc. Dr. Powers received his B.S. from the State University of New York at Geneseo, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Audiology from Ohio University.  He began his career as a partner in an Audiology private practice, and has over 35 years of experience in the hearing health care industry. Prior to his current role, Dr. Powers was Vice-President, Government Services and Professional Relations for Sivantos, Inc.

Dirk Apel is the Head of Enhanced Consumer Experience Segment within the Sivantos Group. He is responsible for patient-facing apps as well as TeleCare and aims to provide good solution which benefit hearing care professionals as well as hearing aid wearers. Dirk Apel joined Sivantos in 2012, holding various positions within Product Management and Marketing since then and has 10 years of experience relating to software in the medical field.
